Why I Study

I decided to study Japanese because I have always been interested in studying languages. It also doesn't hurt that I am an avid watcher of anime (much to the detriment of my GPA). I also enjoy other aspects of learning about the culture, mainly food and drink.

During the first four weeks of Japanese class, I've found it challenging to answer questions during class participation. Recalling proper grammar when on the spot is more difficult than writing answers to homework assignments. Learning new vocabulary nightly isn't always easy either.

  1. I found the vocabulary learning is really hard! Especially the consonants details in the word! I always messed up the consonants in the quizs..... 》~《

    1. One of the things that helps me out with learning vocabulary is to use a flashcard app on my phone. Cards are practiced incrementally based on your comfort level with the cards and the time that has passed. Very useful.

    1. I think it might be easier to say what I don't enjoy. But I won't turn down the opportunity to eat and drink at an izayakaya with friends or family, where we can share some sake and small plates and catch up. I like things like ankimo, hamachi kama, and uni. And so much more! Also matcha! I've recently gotten into some really nice matcha from Ippodo, a shop based in Japan. They have a branch in NYC as well. It's a bit expensive but I think it is worth it to give them a try.

    1. As a proud glutton, picking a favorite is hard. I do love some takoyaki, though.

  4. I think that the vocabulary learning is very easy to fall behind on (especially if you miss a few classes do to illness :/ ) I share your struggle with answering classmates on the spot. Hopefully we will both feel more comfortable on the spot in our future days in Japanese class.

    1. Best of luck, man! Try making flashcards on an app to help you learn. I swear by it. The act of making them helps learn then initially and then reviewing regularly obviously helps as well.

    1. If we are talking alcohol, I'm a bit partial to nigori sake. It's on the sweet side. Otherwise, matcha from Ippodo Tea Co is really good.

  6. Have you ever been to Japan? I'm sure you'd have a great time visiting the anime museums!

    1. I haven't been. It seems like almost everyone has visited Japan before. I just need to find some time (and money). Hopefully, I'll get to go soon.
